Dear Kshanika Goonasekhara,

A good way to handle this problem is to first separate the stream of
kitchen wastes and sewage (pathogenic material from BOD rich material).
Kitchen wastes normally do not have pathogens and could be treated easily
using a conventional biogas plant or one adopted nearer home by NERDC
(north Colombo), Univ. of Ruhuna (Kambarapitia, Dr Weerasinghe) or
Practical Action (near Kandy, Practical Action - Edirasinghe Mawata, Namiz
Musafer, Ph94 11 2856168). All these people have put up kitchen waste
based biogas plants operating for nearly two years. This will reduce the
BOD load to the sewage treatment plant and thereby the sewage sludge the
you will need to hold and treat. The more dilute Sewage could go through
conventional routes (anaerobic-aerobic) where the sludge production will
now be much smaller in quantity and could be exposed to sun and storage
for 6 monnths by when the pathogen count would become minimal. This could
be a good strategy for you to adopt.
best wishes
chanakya
