Interesting question. Here is one fairly recent free publication that relates. Says it is expensive, but they're working on costs..

Dear List,
all biochemical reactions are accompanied by a cascade of electrons
being transfered through a chain of electron acceptors and donors. I
am quite sure that anaerobic digestion is also accompanied by a
similar cascade of electrons. An A.D.Plant does not produce any heat,
but if such a cascade of electrons occurs in anaerobic digestion, it
might be possible to somehow use this electricity.
Yours
A.D.Karve

Dear Tom

We did not hear from Dr AD Karve on this. I wonder if a pure orange peel
diet would affect his small sucrose/starch biogas digester?

Regards

Crispin

All,

Many thanks for the all of the generous suggestions regarding orange peels.
We'll compile them and put them on the websites while we determine what is
most suitable for the particular application in Southern Africa.

I have to admit that when I last looked at a pile of orange peels (in
Brazil) I wasn't thinking of how they could be used. It certainly looks like
at sufficient scale the limonene may be worth recovering. At smaller scales
management (rotting) or use (briquetting, drying, charring) of the peel also
seems to have potential. Pigs and chickens would also probably recycle the
peel, or make enough of a mess to be incorporated in compost or soil.
Feeding to birds with char is not high on my list unless there is a health
benefit. Usually the object is to increase weight gain my increasing intake
rather than reduce intake with a low density material like char.

Regards,

Tom

Hi All,
All i have on oranges is from the wood;
*
The Effect of Using Citrus Wood Charcoal in Broiler Rations on the
Performance of Broilers*
Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of feeding citrus wood
charcoal on the performance, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency of
broiler chicks. A total of 120 broilers of Habbard strain at 22 days of age
were used in the experiment and were divided into four groups of 30 birds in
each. Each group was divided into five replicates with six chicks per
replicate. Birds in the experimental groups were fed citrus wood charcoal at
rates of 0, 2,4 and 8% of the ration DM in replacement of yellow corn. The
results showed that inclusion of citrus wood charcoal at rate of 2% had an
effect on body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion efficiency. The
results indicated that the effect of citrus charcoal is an age dependent as
it had no effect at ages of more than 29 days. However, inclusion of citrus
wood charcoal increased birds abdomen fat.

I used citrus drops in small digesters in Honduras and my experience was
that either fresh or moldy the citrus would decrease gas output
significantly. Seemed that the moldy more so than the fresh which I
attributed to some antibiotic production of the mold.

I have used citrus in Lombriculture and found despite what literatue told me
that worms like them and breed elevated rates when citrus drops are included
in coffee pulp as compared to just coffee pulp. I also found this is true
for Annona, and Guava drops which I attribute to sugar content.
