The aerobic pre-digestion system that is becoming commercial is the
Nisargruna system developed by Dr Kale of <a
href="http://www.barc.ernet.in/akruti-tp/atp_nisar.html">BARC</a>
(Bhaba Atomic Research Centre), Mumbai, India. One of the groups
marketing the system is <a
href="http://www.green-ensys.org/site/Biogas_Plant.html">Greentech-Ensys</a>
who provide useful information on the technology on their website.
Dr Kale has written a <a
href="http://www.scpmaharashtra.com/docs/nisargruna.pdf">paper on
the system</a>. <br>

The system is designed for the organic component of municipal solid
waste. According to the literature on AD, the first stage,
hydrolysis, is carried out by facilitative bacteria that can live
with or without oxygen. Tests that I did many years ago showed that
these bacteria will grab oxygen from the air in the gas space above
the slurry, when a biogas plant is started. Thermophyllic aerobic
hydrolysis is aggressive and breaks down carbohydrates and proteins
into soluble fatty acids. If the process is stopped after a limited
time, the risk of breaking these materials completely into carbon
dioxide and water should be reduced. <br>
