Bryan Sanchez Marcum, Hello,

The best seed for a biogas plant is cattle dung. A biogas plant does
a similar job to a cow's gut. If dung is used as the main feed, the
plant is just using up the food that is left over from what the cows
have already used. If food is added (usually waste food), the
microbes can use more of the material. As food rots down, the right
bacteria do usually grow in the media. However, this is a matter of
chance, so adding dung means there is a source of the right
microbes. Actually a mixture of different types of dung (cow, horse,
pig etc) provides a wider range of possible microbes.

Anaerobic digestion seems to require a wide range of different
microbes (both bacteria and archaea), so there is not a specific
culture that can be added.

Regards,
