No one has suggested suggested poaching things from private websites,
and then re-posting without credit, and that issues is really pretty
well dealt with under standard plagiary laws and/or ethics, of which we
obviously adhere.

I am envisioning a newletter-type posting that summarizes points, gives credit, or at least lists people involved in the conversation. This would be a public list serve run by a non-profit whose goals are to spread the AD WORD. But maybe just generating ideas from this list, that lead to research and monthly topics of discussion would be a better route.

To look at this the other way, I would never cite anything I read in a post here in a research paper, nor would I present it to a Spanish audience as fact. What comments here should lead to is further research that could then back-up opinions. In some cases, for example the work of Dr. Karve, he presents a lot of original research findings, and then invites us to see where those points are published.

Maybe a better way to go would be the translation of questions and comments generated from our spanish list to Enlgish, and then the presentation of them here. They could come with context, and any initial discussion to date. Anyone responding would then know we were going to be translated and re-posted. That way we avoid any issues. I have trouble believing that anyone would be posting anything confidential, and that no one here is really posting anything truly NEW, so I would like to think that comments here are destined for the PUBLIC, regardless of language, but...all of those point warrant further investigation.

What I want to avoid is another Island, isolated, going over the same topics and asking the same questions, with no giant shoulders to stand on...

A

On Tue, Nov 30, 2010 at 4:58 PM, Markus Schlattmann <firmen@schlattmann.de> wrote:
Yes, anything published without password protection in the internet
is public, but generally not public domain (this is often
misunderstood).
Normally if you summarize other people's thougts and writings that
is not your own generated content you give a source information.

This must be so, since nobody would create websites spending hours
in creating content if anyone could recycle this in an easy way,
giving no source information and claiming an own copyright. There
would be just recyclers and no new content.
And sometimes I see ideas or content copied from my page (sometimes
just copy and paste without changing anything). Of course this is
not very amusing.

Even Wikipedia is not "public domain" but "creative commons".

But I actually don't know the license system of the REPP servers,
list owners and users.
And this stuff is not my matter of concern.

Of course I write this in a point of view of a webmaster, not as a
member of this list.

Sorry for being really "offtopic" to biogas discussion.
But if user postings are copied, summarized and translated this may
be of concern for every single user.
If I would have a very good idea, and I would like to discuss this,
I would not do this in the field of public domain.
It also depends who uses the information. Is it a commercial
website? Or another REPP list group?

In my point of view there should be at least a link to the REPP
archive page stating where the original content is taken from. So
there would be also a benefit for the original list.

REPP list postings is exclusive content generated by each single
user.

If it can be copied, summarized and translated by anyone in any way,
it's no more exclusive content.
Then it's public domain. This is the point you should become aware
of.

And if it's public domain, just tell me! I wrote that my english
board is not very active yet, but I could post some summaries,
leading to duplicate content but who cares! ;-)
Forget the last 2 sentences, just a bad joke pointing to the problem
I talk about.

I hope I didn't bore you with this stuff.
Thanks Marcus for the additional thoughts. I think we may be able
to avoid this issues bu summarizing questions and responses, and
attempting to outline differing thoughts or conflicts surrounding
certain issues. As I understand it, anything I post to this forum
is public, and aside from egregious plagiary or slander, recycling
this information would be OK. I do understand your concerns
regarding attribution, or directly quoting anyone in a translation
situation. This may warrant further discussion, and there will
likely be some trial and error.
