Whenever I give talks about renewable energy, even to learned or wealthy groups, I risk insulting my audience with this on a powerpoint/keynote slide:

Critical Thinking
=Seeing both sides of an issue
=Being open to new evidence that disconfirms your ideas
=Reasoning dispassionately
=Demanding that claims be backed evidence
=Using facts for deducing and inferring conclusions
=Accepting appropriate levels of uncertainty

It all fits nicely in 32-point type, and no one has ever told me they were insulted. I seem to recall having to post this at least once before on this listserv.

Date: Thu, 20 Jan 2011 14:56:12 -0800
From: 9watts@gmail.com
To: david@h4c.org; digestion@lists.bioenergylists.org
Subject: Re: [Digestion] larger context/mass exodus

On Thu, Jan 20, 2011 at 2:54 PM, David <david@h4c.org> wrote:

It's not the subject matter that is the problem, if I might venture
an opinion. It's the lack of careful thought, the dearth of
courtesy, the polarized and stubborn holding to positions, the
inflammatory statements, and the like. The highest purpose of
discussions such as take place in fora such as this is to be changed
by the conversation, to learn, to grow in understanding. That does
not happen where people are not listening to one another, and there
is limited evidence in the latter portion of the exchange that the
condition has been met.

well said.
