As Randy points out there are a series of standard calculations accepted by both CER and VER (Certified and Verified - or Voluntary - Emissions Reduction) mechanisms. SNV with BSP in Nepal were the first to define a CDM methodology that was approved, although they had to re-negotiate their methodology when UNFCCC changed their rules. The original calculation gave a figure of 7.4 tonnes of carbon per year (tcpy), although CDM limited the figure to 4.99 tcpy. The revised methodology reduced this figure to 2 tcpy.<br>

SKG Sangha have a set of accepted methodologies under Gold Standard CER and VER mechanisms (see </span><a style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;" href="http://energymap-scu.org/skg-sangha/">http://energymap-scu.org/skg-sangha/</a><span style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;">). A 2 cu.m (internal volume) Deenbhandu plant offsets 5.9 metric tons of carbon per year under that methodology. That calculation includes the saving of artificial fertiliser by using the slurry as a compost. However, SKG Sangha have a much more effective approach to turning effluent slurry into compost than that used in Nepal.<br>

In my view the accounting for the burning of the methane should take credit for a net reduction<br>
of the CO2 emssions which you would have had if methane was left to bubble into the atmosphere <br>
from the manure.<br>
<br>
I.E. total emssions of manure (21 times more than CO2) minus emissions emitted CO2 emitted during<br>
burning of methane = net benefit over<br>

Thanks for the detailed answer. But I was thinking, shouldn't you add those two numbers because biogas both reduces Methane emissions from open pit composting AND reduces unsustainable CO2 emissions from cooking with firewood. Its not an either/or situation, right? <br>

A rural family with 4 cattle heads producing 40kg animal dung would if<br>

1.283kg CO2 is produced per day. So in a year each person produces 0.468t<br>
CO2e and per family of 5 persons we get 2.34t CO2 equivalent per family<br>
per year.<br>

As you see both routes give roughly similar CO2e(quivalent) annually. I<br>
am sure you will get plenty of references for this. Only IPCC default<br>
will not have these specific cattle dung yield or per capita wood<br>
consumption data. This data is typical for rural India around Bangalore<br>
and has been measured many times.<br>
