The issue with human waste is that one person or family cannot generate enough biogas to cook for themselves. However, if people are living closely together, then biogas from human waste becomes very valuable. I will point listers again at </span><a style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;" href="www.ashden.org">www.ashden.org</a><span style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;"> and an excellent project in Rwanda (</span><a style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;" href="http://www.ashden.org/winners/kist05">www.ashden.org/winners/kist05</a><span style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;">) in which AD was processing the waste from huge numbers of people in prison. They were able to save 50% of the firewood used for cooking. On a smaller scale, Biotech (</span><a style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;" href="http://www.ashden.org/winners/biotech">www.ashden.org/winners/biotech</a><span style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;">) is able to save 50% LPG for schools, colleges and other institutions by using both sewage and food wastes, generated by the people working and studying there. Another project is BTAL (</span><a style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;" href="http://www.biogasonline.com/">www.biogasonline.com</a><span style=" font-family:'Verdana'; font-size: 9pt;">), processing sewage in similar institutions, as well as in hospitals, hotels and even the presidential palace. <br>

It has a great educational value as somebody on this list pointed out.<br>

In India there is a social stigma of using biogas from human waste. Otherwise this can be a huge energy potential.<br>

Perhaps this is a little bit off-topic but there are <u>good reasons</u> for making biogas out of human waste.<br>
The fecal matter has to be treated anyway and by anaerobic digestion the amount of waste is heavily reduced.<br>
In Sweden approx. 600 GWh/year biogas is produced in 135 waste water treatment plants.<br>
<br>
The thing with biogas is the multitude of benefits, not only the energy content in the produced biogas.<br>

-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Nutrient recovery (in fact the digestate is a better fertilizer than manure)<br>
-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Soil enhancement (the digestate is an excellent soil enhancer in comparison to combustion of the feedstock)<br>
-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Eliminate the spontaneous methane emissions to atmosphere associated with traditional manure handling<br>
-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Reducing smell<br>
-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Biogas is a high quality fuel that can be used much more efficient and with lower emissions than burning the original feedstock.<br>
-<span style=" font-size: 7pt;"> <span style=" font-size: 11pt;">Upgraded biogas are for instance used as vehicle fuel. Quite a big improvement if one consider the original feedstock…<br>
<br>
The point is that the biogas path offers many advantages of interest for the future sustainable and environmentally friendly human society. <br>

What I have read does say that human waste is pretty useless for biogas (I saw a figure of 1 cubic foot per day from one humans waste) - but I understand that animal like elephants have massively inefficient digestion systems (much food passing through almost entirely undigested) so their dung will be entirely different and contain much more raw ingredients for biogas generation (would dried elephant dung even burn?). There is a calculation to be done, and it can't be based on 'averages' across species.<br>
