Stovers,
this is a question that has been on my mind for a long time. There are
always attempts to purify fuels by removing the non-combustible part from
them (like removal of carbon dioxide from biogas). In combustion of
biomass, one combines the carbon and hydrogen in the fuel with oxygen. If
we redifined this reaction to state that it is the oxygen that burns in the
presence of carbon and hydrogen, then one has to accept the fact that it
is the air that needs purification by removing the excess nitrogen. Nobody
thinks of doing that.
