Is your state in the grip of a general failure of government, growing health pandemic, natural disaster, jihadi insurrection, or merely a two millennia old regulatory infrastructure that has brought your nation to its knees? Congratulations! You're a prime candidate for APLs growing collection of overseas biomass electrification centers! (Actually, that sounds like an apt description for Berkeley, so maybe we should just stay home . . .)
This week APL continues our tour of the failed and fascinating states of the world by announcing our new European headquarters in Terni Italy. Italy is the place to be, if you did not know. Besides being nearly impossible to get any work done here; the people are wonderful, the scenery is gorgeous, the food is amazing, and the biomass power feed-in-tariffs are sky high. In fact, the feed-in-tariffs are currently the highest we've encountered anywhere in the world-- and they are uniquely aimed at small scale, distributed installations. This has produced a flood of interest in our machinery from Italy, which was the final temptation that led to the creation of the new PP25 EU Power Pallet <http://cts.vresp.com/c/?ALLPowerLabs/ea27480fa2/71bda0f77f/132e6573f4/utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=introducing-pp25-eu-power-pallet> (announced last week), and moving half our shop across the Atlantic.
In response, we've now established and are ready to open our new European HQ at the SLO Factory (farm), about an hour northeast of Rome via nice highway. SLO Factory is a new agro-energy research and deployment center sited on a 20 hectare agriturismo farm, framed by the requisite Italian river, lake and mountains. It's beautiful. The founder of the endeavor, Tommaso Onofri, is a longtime promoter of small scale biomass energy solutions, aimed at strengthening family farms and the local food economy in Europe.
For SLO Factory, Tommaso has brought together an impressive collection of engineering companies, academics, and project developers to make SLO Factory a leading site for propagating new solutions at the nexus of energy and local food production (and equally important, food consumption). Yes, SLO Factory is committed to doing something of longterm consequence with the short term incentives currently on offer. And we intend to similarly use the incentives to establish a foundation for long term work on affordable biomass power systems for Europe.
APL is a founding partner in the SLO Factory endeavor. Others include PTP (power to the people), WEG (wise energy group), SLO service, and TechnoForest (Prof Pittaluga & students at Univ of Savona Combustion Lab). The partners secured the farm last Spring, and have been renovating the buildings and hiring local staff this Summer. We now have the basics up and running, and invite all interested to come visit. SLO Factory is the site from which APL Italia will now be selling and servicing APL equipment in Italy, and progressively across Europe. We plan an expanded Authorized Representative program around the continent, as well as new APL Owner/Operator project options, but first we need a local site from where we can regularly install and service machinery. Attempting to do so from Berkeley has been too much of a stretch, so now we've established a permanent presence with full time staff and facilities, here in the Old World.
Our opening event to demonstrate the new machine and introduce SLO Factory and APL Italia is this Saturday, Oct 11th, from 4-7pm. Machines will be running, at least off-grid, and potentially on-grid if ENEL cooperates this week. Jim Mason, the Founder and CEO of APL, will be on hand as will various APL staff from both the US and now Italy.
The program for Saturday is as follows:
4:00 to 5:00 pm: Reception and machine demonstration
5:00 to 6:00 pm: Presentation of the technology
6:00 to 7:00 pm: Purchase Options and O&M services
7:00 pm: Aperitif
