[Gasification] Results of wood burning contest Fwd: December Wood Heat Newsletter

Dear Jason,
Many inventors assume that they have but a single chance to strike "paydirt"
but actually there are many. Having a worked-out design means relatively
little. Transforming that design to a net positive cash flow is more and
making a profit is the next step. Capitalism is about risk and unless you
have the intellectual and financial resources to go it alone you will need
partners.both financial and technological. Just pick well! (but get used to
the inevitability!)
Best, Mark

Thanks Tom and Mark,
Tom I have to be careful with disseminating too much information as there is
a lot of time an money invested in this and it is yet to make a return. For
the moment I don't have an income so I need it to work.
I don't think it would take too much for a man or your calibre to work it
out, the design itself is really simple but then it took me two years to get
it that way. Once my financial position is assured I will disseminate more
information but PM me if you want more detail that I provide here.
In terms of stoves it turns an old stove into downdraft and that is nothing
new, Lopi and Vermont Castings have downdraft models. One of the keys to the
clean burn is through getting the combustion temperature closer to adiabatic
through the configuration, I believe it is this that helps consume all the
carbon monoxide. Although with downdraft it can be prone to picking up a bit
of ash. The trick is in the tuning and I learnt a lot more about that at the
Decathlon as that was the first time I have had a gas analyser on it. Since
the Decathlon I have had ideas on how to improve it further so more R&D is
ahead, but the basic unit works pretty well.
What I did just before the Decathlon is purpose build a prototype stove for
burning wet wood. This was done at the request of a businessman interested
in my technology and had done some of his own evaluation on the retrofit
(subject to an NDA). The retrofit has the added bonus of permitting the use
of damp wood, or up to 30% moisture content, so this businessman requested I
try to push this further to suit the unseasoned wood that is available on
his local market. Unfortunately wet wood performance wasn't measured at the
Decathlon or the result may have been very different. The prototype I have
will burn wood at 45% moisture content with no visible smoke. Both versions
do of course require warming up on dryer wood. What I want to test next is
whether I can also get the damp/wet wood performance to zero as well.
In terms of emissions I see wet wood performance in a retrofit as a real way
forward, especially given estimates of between 7 & 10 million older wood
stoves in the USA alone.
I haven't yet seen a way forward for a TLUD application unless it is fan
assisted but my mind is always full of ways to try and improve various types
of combustion.
One think you, or someone else, may be able to help with that I have been
seeking an answer for is the energy balance when wood derived steam is
passed through the charcoal bed but then the resultant gases burnt in situ.
I am a designer rather than a scientist or engineer so that one is beyond my
high school chemistry.
Kind Regards
Jason

As a subscriber and reader of these lists for some years now I feel it is
appropriate to comment on this topic since I was a finalist in this contest
with The IntensiFire technology. I was contemplating a reply but given the
relevant thread started by Ken Boak I thought I had better jump in sooner
rather than later.

What will be of interest to you all is that one of the judges recognised The
IntensiFire for what it is, and what I intended it to be, a gasifier within
a stove.
The stove I retrofitted for the Decathlon was an old Treemont, perhaps 30+
years old, and was destined for the scrap metal dealer. It was problematic
for me as it was 2.5x larger than any wood stove I had worked with before
and I spent the entire contest tuning it. The 8" flue was also new, having
previously only worked with 150mm.
My best performance was delivered on the last day and unfortunately as I had
operated the stove was not an independent test so don't believe it is
reflected in the judging. That test produced zero emissions using the Testo
380, I don't have the official results back yet from Brookhaven National
Laboratory but am keen to get my hands on it. Zero meaning zero particulates
and zero carbon monoxide, or as Trevor Gionet described it "perfect
combustion"(screen shot available). The test was of course only a 15 minute
sample from a batch burn but in this instance the insane stack temperatures
mean the gas analyser overheated at around the 12 minute mark. I am glad you
posted the link Paul as it was one that I had missed. I had believed that
the crazy stack temperatures had hurt the efficiency figures, but to beat
out the 82% certified stoves in this category was satisfying.
It seems there may well be a future for this technology but I am learning
all the time, these lists are of course a part of my education :-)
Great work by John Ackerly in putting the event together.
Both Popular Mechanics and National Geographic published the results.

Dear all,
The message below gives you links to a variety of internet sources for

It is not specific about gasification.
It is not specific about stoves for developing societies.
It is not about devices that make biochar.
But I think and hope that many readers will find useful information.
There were 12 contestants. For a short summary, the top 6 devices in each
of 7 ratings are discussed in:
