<br>i'm still in munich and still enjoying the deutsches museum. i asked for permission to inspect the internals of the imbert gasifier on the adler and was, shockingly, granted an "ok" to do so. i spent three hours digging around in it yesterday, taking pictures of all internals, measuring details for cad drawings, and taking char samples. i was rather wonderful, in a somewhat disturbingly geeky way. <br>
<br>after closer inspection, i need to somewhat retract the statement that the ancients had nothing on us "moderns". there were some unusual and unexpected things in the imbert. things i've never realized from the drawings and the reports. nothing game changing, but some of the details and integrations between internal reactor components was more mature than we've realized. i'm going to need to write this up in a series of reports, going component by component. in the interim, here's a portrait of the researcher at work . . . <br>

<br>i didn't get to spelunk the ford gasifier. i only got to dig through the one on the adler. but fortunately i got to dig all i wanted. the musuem staff was excited that someone actually cared about this. the docents wanted to learn lots of details of why and how, as they gives tours of this machine regularly. <br>

|||Those were hard times, self earned of course. People I talked to who had<br>
lived that time told me everything good was reserved for military<br>
production,<br>
civil items were welded together by any means, gas mostly or with crap<br>
electrodes and by those workers ( very often unskilled women and compulsary<br>
labour) the war could spare.<br>
And god knows how often they fixed broken weldings after a unlit night drive<br>
<br>
over badly worn roads full of potholes. My parents told me amazing stories<br>
about improvising and survival.<br>
Plain sheet steel was everything they had, anything noble went into weapons.<br>
With the same effort in civil achievements, Hitler would have won any war<br>
without fighting one...<br>

If you ever have a chance to see the Verkehrsmuseum Luzern (CH) , go.<br>
It is smaller than the DM but really woth your while.<br>
