It makes a big difference to me as I often have logs bigger than my 
stove.  :-)  Additionally, it lights a lot more easily, and it dries 
much faster.  All those things otherwise being equal, I will go out on a 
limb and say that heat output will be the same.

Burn temperatures don't _directly_ affect heat output.
