[Greenbuilding] Some vernacular underground architecture from the 30s

While wandering about, I came across this interesting photo. . .

It shows a woman standing in front of a church from the 1930s in Oregon, but
on closer examination, it's clear that the church is a dugout, that is, it
is mostly underground except for the roof. This was so curious I decided to
google the name of the church and see what else could be uncovered about it.

Scroll down to mid page, and you'll find 3 photos of interest, two of the
church, one is the same we've already seen but one is taken from further
away so it shows its profile better, and a third of the living room of an
underground dugout one room house.

Sensible, climate-appropriate living of the era. I predict this kind of
thing will become more popular going forward. I wonder if any plans have
endured from those days?
