If the bottle does in fact refract light, then what strikes me is the similarity to a deck prism - the prisms of glass set in the decks of old sailing vessels to let light into the cabin below.  They can be quite surprisingly effective (small opening but lots of light spread through the cabin).  

They would certainly let in more light than even a much larger window because of their orientation toward the sky & sun - esp. in equatorial latitudes where the sun's generally high overhead.
