[Greenbuilding] Geothermal a/c

Steve,

Yes, you are correct. But a great deal of folks refer to ground/water source heat pumps as geothermal units, as did Phil, so I stuck with it for his sake. Sorry for the confusion.

Semantics perhaps, but I believe you are talking about 'Ground Source' or 'Water Source' or 'Air Source' heat pump systems.
My understanding is that 'Geothermal' is a system that taps into underground heat sources such as steam or even volcanic heat sources...

  Cheers, Steve.

    Phil,

We have a geo heat pump in our own house here on Maryland's coast, and as of the last few years use them exclusively in our projects. It's now 99 degrees with a heat index of 121. I just went up to our attic and it's 80*. The house is maintaining a very comfortable level of conditioning, and not burning a great deal of KWs.

I'm sold, as are my clients.

      Another question:

I'm designing a waterfront house on the the gulf coast, and considering a geothermal heat pump for a/c.

Especially attractive with 30% tax credit. And no outside compressors degrading in salt-air.

Anyone have experience with geothermal cooling in a hot/humid climate?

I see them touted a lot in heating climates. Just curious if I should believe the hype.

And yes, I've talked with suppliers about 'hot loops' and why they happen.

      Thanks for any insight!
