I found some nice clearance sale marble tiles (12" x 12"), they also had 
granite (for twice the price, i.e. $2 per tile).  My whole counter cost 
less than $100, including way too much adhesive, professional cutting, 
and DIY installation.

Try Habitat Re-store if there is one near you.
