[Greenbuilding] Foam insulation advice needed

Hi, all--

I apologize in coming late to this discussion so please excuse if this comment has already been made.

We looked for a sub-slab insulation to replace extruded polystyrene but could not find any with the minimum compressive strength required by code. I doubt that a spray-in foam would qualify, unless the slab has some other integrated support, such as a coffered structure.

We used Roxul rock wool batts for perimeter insulation, which cuts the greatest heat loss, at the slab edges into the coldest ground.

We used 2" of Demilec spray-in foam for vaulted ceilings and rim joists, combined with unfaced fiberglass batts, to get a good mix of air sealing and effective insulation. We did not experience any health-related reactions to the foam, although I did note the crew wore respirators and full-body suits. Their explanation was to avoid inhaling small droplets of foam and keep same off their clothing. As far as I can determine there are no significant hazardous emissions from the cured-in-place foam.

Best,

Mike O'Brien
