I prefer Land Ark because I prefer to let someone else source, mix, cook and package a finishing product (and it works well). Same reason I buy screws and bolts rather than making them: it costs me less and I'm not as good at it as a specialist manufacturer. I don't find the coffee or priest analogies to be useful here.
Land Ark is made of tung oil, linseed oil, beeswax, citrus solvent, and pine rosin: <http://www.landarknw.com/SearchResults.asp?Cat=48> I'm happy to let them formulate these in to a final product for my use on timbers. I don't have the time (or inclination) to experiment and most of my clients prefer not to be guinea pigs. Your results may vary.

For the same reason I don't think you need a priest to speak to god..."
