For me at least, the error terms in moisture content of the wood, 
current house conditions, daily variations in daily activity, etc. are 
going to exceed the errors in HDD calculations.

If you really want to do it correctly, you should record not only 
outdoor temperature, but indoor temperature on an hourly basis (plus 
tons of other stuff of course).  At that point someone else's weather 
station far from you is useless anyway.
