[Greenbuilding] Uses for shiddle-diddle (was Re: A question regarding sealing in VOCs)

I know a guy who uses discarded carpet as mulch/weed barrier in his
vegetable garden. But I would worry about chemicals from the carpet,
or residue from carpet cleaning chemicals, leaching into the soil, and
making it's way into the produce. Is this a legitimate concern?
