Hoping you can convince the “poweres that be” that now is the time to rebuild sustainably.

Thanks for this post, Jason -

We only lost power for two days as well and had minor tree issues. And I have been and am so worried about people who might be stuck in homes or apartments without enough food or water and resources. I am eager to know what we can do to really help. Personally and professionally.

To the extent I can help through Rate It Green in terms of hosting information exchange and conversations about rebuilding, however specific they need to be by topic or community, count me in for the effort. I would consider adding features I might not have planned yet if it can help.

Personally, I am interested in helping directly as opportunities arise and individuals can find ways to be helpful and effective. Maybe we can organize donations of time and services, whether people donate planning help, or on site expertise or labor, or are willing to just go help in time with specific rebuilding projects. I'd go put in some time working on a building in person. I think this opportunity is also going to exist for some time.

Maybe in this rebuilding, there are both environmental opportunities to do better at the same time we can offer some support for people who might already need work and who might need work now as a result of this disruption and damage. This is really a time for the triple bottom line.

Maybe Habitat can get involved, since I know they have experience in organizing large numbers of volunteers. Just a thought. Who out there knows what green and other volunteer efforts are in progress?

Thanks,
Allison

We were lucky enough, here in Maryland, to only be down for 2 days from
Sandy with no damage. But we are following an inquiry about helping the
rebuilding process in NJ and NY so that as families rebuild they do it with
a priority on green attributes and, in the shadow of Katrina & ?passive
survivability?, to be prepared for the next time.

Given that both NY Governor Cuomo and mayor Bloomberg have both pegged
climate change on Sandy and said they expect this to happen again, there?s a
window to move people into proaction.

We would welcome any info, advice, leads for organizations, associations,
chapters, NGOs, and agencies to talk to, and other thoughts relating to the
state of the building and remodeling markets, gauging the absorption of
green, potholes and barriers, how permitting works, the use of unions and
subcontractors, and other concerns on the ground that can make-or-break
success.

Thx,

Jason Holstine
