[Greenbuilding] Circa 1766 roof shingles

You got me curious as I've not seen half timbered houses like that in the
states (where the timbers are visible). I googled it and they mention that
they are tile roofs which makes sense as they have made bricks for the
infill.
Interesting that they made bricks rather than a clay straw infill. Also I
had always assumed that halftimbering was a result of an increasing scarcity
of wood 'in the day'. Perhaps in N. Carolina the trees were just too big.

Old Salem village in
Winston Salem, North Carolina
Moravian houses built 1766 to late 1700's. They are currently lived in by
Private residence.
The roof shingles look like cut stone.
Does anyone know what material
The roof shingles on these houses
Could be made out of?
