It's hard to tell from google maps 
But the older and really "weathered"
Tiles on some of the Moravian 
Bldgs in Winston-Salem were of 
The cupped , half-cylinder variety.
I believe you are correct as to 
Increasing their longevity with this 
Design.  

Great point because the roofs that 
Looked much older are cupped tiles.
