[Greenbuilding] OT - Saving millions of XP PCs/Laptops

They don't have to be discarded but if nothing is done they will.


People discard things for far sillier reasons than the valid security concerns of XP not being supported. Some time ago MS was advertising you should buy a new computer so you can use their latest OS. This list may recall I started a petition to ask them to stop doing that.

To answer some other posts:

- Anti virus software is unlikely to be sufficient - this is not like Y2K. Anti-Malware software will only work if MS cooperates with those vendors. MS will not.

- Ubuntu (and others) will allow you to dual-boot. This will let you keep your XP installation for software that you can not live without, and is not available on linux. 

I find it incredible that folks on this list (who advocate change) are so reluctant to change their own behaviour. The Open-Source movement needs environmentalist to join the cause, both causes have the same underlying root problem, our economic system....
