... a simulation could have 1 minute time steps and 100 virtual pulse
generators activated by individual accumulators that add a fixed amount dT
from a uniform random number generator with each time
step, proportional to the daily source frequency, plus another amount dS
proportional to source correlation from each pulse generator with an active
output. When an inactive pulse generator accumulator reaches a fixed
threshold, we could dump its accumulator and fire its output for a random
interval with the average source duration.

For example, 100 sources with 4 hour/day average durations and 0%
correlation and a 0.5 firing threshold would have 24hx60mxdT = 0.5, ie dT =
0.000347 and dS = 0.

With 20% correlation, dT = 0.8x0.000347 = 0.000278. The average number of
active sources would be  100x4h/24h = 16.7, and 16.7dS = 0.2x0.000347 makes
dS = 4.16x10^-6.
