A couple of snippets from a 2010 document "Green Schools as High
Performance Learning Facilities"
http://www.ncef.org/pubs/greenschools.pdf
============ copied material ============
" ... green schools save $100,000 per year on average, with 30 to 45
percent reduction in water use and a 30 to 50 percent reduction in energy
use and utility bills, compared to a typical school. The result is a
payback of the 2 percent first-cost premium within a few years. (USGBC,
2010)"
" A healthier school environment is another benefit of green schools,
beyond lower operating costs. ... have been shown to improve student
focus, retention, and test scores; enhance teacher performance; and lower
absenteeism among both students and teachers.
... savings from reduced emissions, higher productivity, teacher
retention, and employment impacts,
and lower rates of asthma and other illnesses, we see an additional
payback of $64 per square foot. This is a total payback 20 times the
initial investment for a green school. (Kats, 2006)"
======= * =========
And in the section entitled " Green Schools, Health, and Productivity"
there are discussions about the student productivity benefits of the Green
awareness items such as healthy materials selection/ventilation rates/
IAQ, daylighting/access to views
The document is short enough (13 pages + 3 pages of references) that it
can be suggested as compulsory reading for all of the members on the
advisory committee.
