[Greenbuilding] data energy use

Operation of an iphone uses more energy in a year than a fridge?

Watching an hour of a streaming video on a tablet is equivalent to 2 fridges?

also a critique of that article

A google search takes about 0.7 BTU's and generates 0.2 g of CO2. (I googled it).......................Norbert

Thanks for that. It could actually a good thread for discussion. We
potentially spend as much now on data as heating. And cost is always an
energy equivalent in some form or other. Utilities used to be a simple
component in design. I probably spend more time on figuring out how best to
provide for data in a built environment now than I spend on energy
modelling. I am starting to think that household data usage and storage
should be part of that energy model - the www storage component especially
as that data keeps being replicated and stored.

Totally off-topic John :-)

But since you mention it, check out Ooma, I made the switch a few weeks ago
and it's flawless, massively cheaper than Bell even with the premium service
with way more services than Bell even offers, and you can keep your existing
number as well as set it up with your cell phone, etc. (you can port over 2
lines with the $20 / mo. Premium service, or one line and basic services for
$3 / mo.). Now that I've ditched Bell, I can't wait to cut the cord with
Hydro One next!
