[Greenbuilding] Insulatin over existing exterior siding

Posting for a friend.

She is extensively renovating a 1960's bungalow with no insulation and 
air leaks. Existing exterior is aluminum siding, likely over clapboard. 
She has not pulled any siding to see if there is clapboard under the 
aluminum.

Location is Hamilton, Ontario.

She wants to seal, insulate and apply new siding and install new 
windows. Windows will use some existing openings and add others. Some 
openings may be closed or reduced. She plans to strip the aluminum, but 
has had conflicting opinions on whether to strip any clapboard underneath.

Told her I'd tap the expertise of this group!
