[Greenbuilding] DIY sloped tiled shower floor, simple version?

There is no sketch bu a couple of things –

shape is one thing- you can make it out of whatever you want as long as there is a waterproof membrane tied to the drain over that and under the tile (or) under a mortar bed. And the construction is sufficiently stiff to support the tile and the shape.

Most concrete boards are not waterproof and the membrane is designed to be coupled with the drain creating a continuous seal or pan – the membrane should extend up the wall. There are waterproof boards that can be used with proper seam material to function as a membrane (ditra board, etc.)

Curbless depends on sufficient floor area (catchment area) coupled with a slope to a drain (usually 5deg) and a 2” drain (now the code requirement).

That is why you will see the drain against the shower wall and typically a linear drain in a curbless with the entire shower floor sloped to the drain. Also generally a good idea to extend the membrane into the bathroom a bit if it is a small shower – 3’ is really a good minimum

There are inexpensive vinyl and poly membranes available but they typically are bulky to work with to get corners and seams to lay properly.

Is there any reason I can't cut a bunch of shallow wedges laid in a radial pattern that feather toward the drain, nail cement board on top, tape the seams and lay down the tile?

This seems a lot simpler than some of the instructions I find online. My sketch above doesn't include any membrane or treatment of the seams where this sloped floor meets walls. The shower in question is in the corner of a small upstairs bathroom. The walls will be tiled and I would like/think I can get away with avoiding a step/lip where the sloped floor meets the rest of the bathroom floor

All thoughts and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Reuben
