Neither describe our situation, for what it's worth.

Well the only hose I've used is the one that came supplied/caulked to the
porcelain. It definitely has faint ribs. It sounds like this hose may be
(one of) the chief culprit(s). I'd love to switch to something smoother and
perhaps larger in diameter. Any reason not to go with, say, clear vinyl
hose? Any suggestions for how to attach it to the porcelain?

This is perhaps the biggest challenge with these toilets. To actually
install them with a reasonable number of available hands you have to be
able to guide the hose to fit into what in our case is a fixed vertical 2"
ABS line. Perhaps the easiest is if the flex hose isn't flex at all or even
positively attached to the porcelain unit but press fit so that when
lifting the toilet (during installation or to troubleshoot issues such as
we're discussing here) one doesn't have to be so careful about alignment in
spaces that are very difficult to access--without bulimic children to send
into tight crevices and many more hands than anyone I've met.

I would appreciate knowing more about these odor filters. This was where my
query started. Are you at liberty to share info, Carol?

No kidding.
