Hi Bill;

I have designed, built, and installed quite a few solar air heater
systems, as
well as designing many passive solar homes with either Direct Gain (windows)
and/or Indirect Gain with forced air circulation and underfloor thermal
storage.
These sunspaces are basically big walk-in solar air heaters. Definitely, a
well
designed solar air heater should give you far more heating season net
heating,
as well as much less cooling season overheating, than windows cause, and no
nighttime heat losses. A well designed air heater should produce about
100,000
BTU/ft² per heating season, in most climates. As heating seasons are
colder,
they are also longer for more useful heat collection time, and vise-versa.

Use a Matrix type absorber, also known as Pass Through, or Transpired,
where the air first enters the area in front of the absorber, and passes
through
it, to the area behind the absorber. These absorbers can be made of a couple
of layers of window screen, or fully vented aluminum soffit material.
Advantages
of using soffit material are that the openings can be adjusted to
optimize/even
the air flow path at higher air flow rates, of up to 6ft³ per ft² of
collector area,
instead of just 2ft³. This allows the collector to operate at lower
temperatures
to reduce glazing heat loss. As for glazing, 6mm polycarbonate TwinWall
works well (light weight, durable, high solar transmittance, fairly
economical,
easy to work with, etc). Size the panel depth for keeping the air
velocity
around 9ft/sec. Avoid any wood inside the panel interior. Use
Polyisocyanurate
insulation to line it (and for the back) for its high temperature capacity.
You
can use an inexpensive thermal switch to tune the fan on and off, and a
variable speed control. You could also get a thermistor control that will
vary the speed according to the temperature.

Don't waste your time with back pass or beer can collectors.
