actually...if folks spent time outside ACTUALLY working ...they would be overwhelmed by how hot we keep our homes! They would not wish for central heat because a cool bedroom is refreshing! <br><br> I know because as a builder I am outside--- all day every day in my longjohns. <br>
<br>I come home and I wear felt boot liners as slippers, and I keep my longjohns on and often wear a toque or hooded sweat shirt in the house.<br><br> I do not feel that this awkwardly broadcasts my lower class status. but rather my connection to our planet in that-<br>
<br> I live outdoors and take temporary refuge in my dwelling the way we have existed for most of human history .<br><br>I set my thermostat by looking to see if i can see my breath. If I can I bump it up by about 2 degrees farenheit (about 58 degrees farenheit total) <br>
<br>This is exactly why legislating energy efficiency is <b>not </b>going to save us. It effectively mandates consumption (of resources to insulate) <br><br>we need to mandate conservation. <br><br>....my thoughts for the day<br>

I'm in Seattle at the moment looking at housing stock. I am amazed to see<br>
little or no insulation in the small older craftsman style houses built in<br>
the first quarter of the last century. This only where I can actually check<br>
it out, like areas that open to space beneath the roof. Here I see no<br>
insulation at all. Again, is roof insulation in this part of the country<br>
non-existent? Energy efficient building non-existent?<br>
<br>
I'm in the very strange position of needing to invest a fair amount of money<br>
in a property. Expensive here, I am looking in the $500,000 price range<br>
which doesn't get one much in this city. Working with a Realtor I like, I<br>
nonetheless would be happy to have advice. Am checking out any sort of<br>
housing within about 5-6 miles of downtown Seattle. I have strict time<br>
constraints.<br>
<br>
Anyone on this list living in Seattle? I know the housing bubble created a<br>
frenzy of building in the last decade, probably bad construction. Are there<br>
known good builders? Who are they? Am interested in viewing anything built<br>
over the last 100 years. Prefer no condos.<br>

People used to bundle up and put up with drafts. Hard to fathom. We've<br>
gotten so soft.<br>
<br>
In my neighborhood in the next big city to the South of you it is similar.<br>
Lots and lots of houses that still lack insulation. Maybe a little in the<br>
attic, but not much anywhere else. I blame central heating. If folks had to<br>
chop wood and heat the great outdoors with it they'd have wised up long ago.<br>
