Agreed the PHPP isn't the best choice for accuracy, I use IES<ve>
in that<br>
case. I find PHPP really shines on quick comparative analysis. In
John's<br>
case, you could grab a few slab & footing designs, use THERM to
calculate<br>
each edge performance accurately (thermal bridge, linear PSI value),
and<br>
then throw the open area Uvalue & PSI into PHPP to quickly compare
the<br>
overall performance of each.<br><br>
I'm not familiar with HOT3000, but to do what I described in
IES<ve> would<br>
be much more time consuming than in PHPP, and if you're more interested
in<br>
selecting the best design than in an accurate annual performance
prediction,<br>
PHPP is my choice.<br><br>
Can you enter custom slab edge effects in HOT3000?<br><br>

HOT3000 is an hourly model that uses actual hourly weather files and a

mass and energy balance. This allows it to be much more accurate if

accuracy is required.<br>
The monthly average method used by PHPP is quite an approximation
and<br>
requires fudge factors to get close to the right answer. I have
often heard<br>
it claimed to be "the most sophisticate" or "the most
accurate", but I have<br>
never seen these claims substantiated. PHPP's best feature is
its<br>
simpleness and transparency (features I value very highly), but it is
not<br>
that sophisticated. Never use it for detail design myself, just for
initial<br>
scoping design.<br>
THERM is needed for most energy modeling programs to get the R-value
of<br>
details right.<br>
WINDOW or similar is useful to get true window U-value.<br><br>
