Suggests to me that leaving the fly screen in will reduce solar
gain enough to make you fail the hurdle, as would a tree growing a
bit. Of course, one could be saved by having two pet dogs giving
off extra heat, or maybe a workout room. And did you know that
some insulations have R-values that increase by over 10% when it
is cold out, and others that decrease by more than 20% when it
very cold? What R-value does one assume in PH?
It seems ludicrous to worry about energy at this level of
precision (eg 4.75 vs 4.85) with systems and tools that are many
times less precise (eg 4.75 +/-0.25 would be an very optimistic
estimate of accuracy), especially when the energy to run a
satellite TV with Personal Video Recorder (500 kWh/yr) could
amount to the same amount of total energy use (4.75 kBtu/sf/yr) in
a 1076 sf = 100 m2 home.
Bam! Specific heat demand went from 4.69 KBtu/sf/an up to 5.76.
the Passive House spec, tattoed on my right arm (over the one that
reads "MOTHER"), is 4.75.
but then I put on a sweater and reset the interior temperature,
from 68d Fh down two measly degrees to 66d. Pow! Specific heat
fell to 4.52,
I know it is heretical to say so, but our expectations have
something to do with sustainability.
