While we are at it, why not eliminate irons. How many
nuclear, coal, and now fraking natural gas fired power plants feed these
un-necessary devises? I am looking for the day we adopt a survival
aesthetic. Just like developing an appreciation of the aesthetics of a
cloths line that reduces the ugly strip mines and fraking pollution. This
purist mentality has not taken hold of our culture yet. Collectively, we are not
acting to achieve sustainability. Until we act in a way that preserves the
resources and resilience of the environment available for the future, we are
going down. Getting that criteria understood is critical to achieving it,
even among liberals and environmentalist.

made it through two kids and cloth diapers.

Matt, the energy profile on clothes dryers showcases it as the most
energy intensive item in the house (more than a refrigerator - it's just that
the refrigerator is running all the time, while a clothes dryer is perhaps daily
+/-).

I have been trying to pool together some more volunteers to help
write in line-drying clothes into a LEED Pilot credit or something! My
good friend from college founded LaundryList.org and they were gaining great
exposure - fighting no line drying laws across the country, being in newspapers,
making folks away, giving out tips/tricks for an easier way of line-drying, EVEN
being on the Colbert Report! :)

But Reuben is spot on: by far the simplest and easiest way to reduce
energy use is line drying.

Certainly balancing the concept of a more efficient refrigerator will
go much further than a more efficient dryer (run time and usage rate - as
exemplified by the thread on tankless hot water heaters).

After line drying for a few years, I never understood why I used the
dryer so much in the first place.... The sun works great!
