<p>What about inoculation of the wood chips with mushroom spore? Would this cause the wood chips to breakdown faster. It should increase the biota in the chip covering, potentially provide food or a harvest for the occupants and be low maintenance.<br>

Though if your in direct sunlight fruiting may be an issue.<br>
