<div dir="ltr">I agree he may not want the maintenance of a wood stove but when the cold hits, you'd be amazed at how people get enthusiastic about stoking the fire. My focus is to set him up with something ecological that stays within his budget but is suitable enough so he doesn't do something silly in desperation - like buy lots of space heaters and rack up a massive electric bill.<div>
For the hot but not sweltering I suggest massive industrial fans with exterior shading. For the really hot I don't know anything except mounted AC's....(minisplits does not make sense for the time period of 5-10 years.</div>

I get the feeling this client won’t go for the maintenance and effort of a stove—sourcing the fuel, stoking it, clean-up, etc. Flipping a switch if/when he needs will be his thing. I’d just get him to sign a document clarifying what conditions he may expect given the design he is requesting, and relieve you of responsibility.<div class="im">

Thanks for the comments. The client doesn't want any insulation. He is an artist and thinks he will be ok with a raw temp studio. I pointed out that a container in the summer is like a Japanese torture chamber and in the winter like a Russian gulag. <br>
As a concession we are insulating around the base to keep the cold air out from under the floors. The interior walls will get 3" inches PolyISO. on top of the container the roof will get 3" XEPS and an extensive green roof. The ceiling nothing for now. The weakest point is the corner where the walls meet the ceiling since there is a direct thermal bridge. If the insulation was on the inside ceiling meeting the insulated walls I could break that bridge but the containers are low at 8' when raw space.<br>
Anyway, if his claims of being ok with the temps is true, then we only need a little boost to cut the extremes. I'm getting one suggestion for radiant heat. I'm thinking of suggesting a pellet stove....<br>

I have one in my office and one in my uninsulated garage. Instant-on zoned radiant heat is the only way to go in an uninsulated space that is not living space. Get real radiant heaters that beam the heat, which means either a glowing element with a reflector, or a panel with a significant surface area. Forget anything with a fan, oil filled, or that makes efficiency claims - they all work off electric resistance, at 100% conversion efficiency because the losses happen upstream. (Like Amory Lovins famously said, "heating with electricity is like cutting butter with a chainsaw").<br>

It is a matter of minimizing convection heating, that will simply go up and out unless you heat individual small rooms with closed doors and without high ceilings.<br>
