Great stuff. Thank you all for your suggestions and experiences. 3/4" is very doable, In one particular area it is close, but I can make it work. 3" long drywall screws also seems like a great idea. I have a bunch of those left over from twenty years ago, before I ever met Robertson much less Torx screws.

On Sat, Dec 3, 2016 at 12:14 PM, Jeff Martin <jeff@open2learn.ca> wrote:

We've been using nominal 1 x 3s (3/4" x 2 5/8"). I agree with
Clarke that 3/8" seems likely to be too thin. I don't think that
3/8" strips would hold the screws reliably or be stiff enough,
although ripped strips of 3/8" plywood might.

If trying to gain 3/8" of space is that crucial, I think the
better solution for you, Reuben, is to temporarily hold the foam
in place with the washered nails, then install your drywall
directly over the foam, using 3" drywall screws. That way you'll
gain the full 3/4" you would have lost using furring strips
between the foam and the drywall. I think the main challenge that
you'll face is hitting your studs reliably, when you're driving
the 3" screws through the foam, especially at inside corners.
