[Stoves] Improved Stoves without chimneys being used indoors or not?

Dear Marc

Good points. There are several incongruent disease theories out there and
the link between smoke and health is not part of all of them.

People used to think malaria was caused by 'bad air' (mal aria) and the
Brits in Britain where it used to be endemic called it 'ague' with no real
attribution to source.

We have discussed this before: improving the stoves may cause an increase in
malaria and other diseases.

BTW lots and lots of Africans cook outside when it is sunny and under a
shelter built for the purpose, often called the kitchen. Many have open
sides.

In a REASWA survey in Swaziland about 10 years ago we found a very large PM
exposure difference between lowveld Swazi cooks and Mocambicano cooks who
were in the country as refugees. The latter built mud houses with basically
no ventilation and build open fires inside them. They came from areas where
malaria was rampant. Maybe they were the survivors.

Regards

Crispin
