At ETHOS 2011 Sam Bentson and Ryan Thompson of Aprovecho made an interesting
presentation on their test of charcoal burning stoves. they did 5 Liter
Water boiler Tests for about 7 stoves. Each stove was tested 7 times. Stoves
included as Jiko, Lao Bucket (GERES, Cambodia), Okela(?), Recho Mirak
(Haiti), Mali, and Prakti (india), Pulumusa, Stovetec (Aprovecho) and
Jikopoa (Burn Design Lab).

Christoph Messinger from GIZ noted that their average fuel consumption of
200 g per test was half what he had experienced (400g ) in the field in
Southern Africa with charcoal stoves.

The reason for the low fuel use may be apparent when their presentation
makes it onto the ETHOS website.

In the meantime has anyone seen a difference this great between the lab and
the field?

I wondered if part of the difference may be partly due to the quality of the
fuel, i.e. differences in volatile and ash content. Aprovecho used lump
hardwood charcoal from Bimart (Royal Oak). Are there any studies of the
proximate analysis (volatile carbon, fixed carbon, ash. MC) of charcoals in
developed and developing countries?

Thanks
