[Stoves] burning rice husk / IR measurements

Quick question - does your kiln have a little access door to peek inside?

Dear Crispin,

>From what I have read from people on this list; It seems the IR does not
actually measure temperature (like expanding
mercury) but interprets UV waves(?) coming off an object. Different colors
and texture can change those waves so the instrument must be adjusted to
estimate the real temperature of the object / surface the waves are coming
off.

In a box of constant temperature everything in that box is at that
temperature. If the readings differ depending on color-texture we should be
able to adjust the IR detector to the right temperature. Then next time we
have the IR adjustment set to that surface and we can measure the
temperature without the accurate bi-metal thermocouple in place. Is that how
you look at it?

I purchased the IR detector you suggested. I like that it comes with a probe
reading also.

But adjusting the IR reading with emissivity dial to match the probe is
difficult. Perhaps because when the door is open one must be fast!

I was going to have several pipes that I use for reading temperature. They
were planned to have a surface area I would always point the gun at. Now I
am thinking I will have a hole in one pipe for a probe inserted. I prefer
pointing the gun at it so I could look at different places. I worry the side
or front-back will have different temperatures with venting etc.

Thanks
Frank

Dear Frank

I am not forgetting your unanswered question about the actual temperature of
your little pipe if the emissivity is different. Just trying to get time to
be sure I give you the right answer.

Stovers,

I was talking to a rice grower in Northern Calif. and found out that Wild
Rice has much less silica in the hulls than White Rice. I haven't tested
wild rice hulls to confirm.

Dear Rajan

One stove that burns whole rice hull efficiently is the Mayon Turbo Stove.

I do not know whether a stove can efficiently burn rice husk.

But it seems rice husk can be burnt efficiently in FBC ( fluidised bed
combustion ) boilers. There are several medium sized FBC boilers operated
all over India. So the fuel need not go waste.

Rajan
