Crispin. In answer to your questions about the Maasai ICSEE stove

The metal is just under 2mm thick. The hole is round. There is a metal collar coming up under the hole. So it is like the pot sits on the end of a tube 21cm in diameter. The burning wood is on a grate under the other end of the tube. The fire and smoke come up under the pot and go out an opening in this collar In the front and circle around the collar to get to the chimney. This path is essential for efficiency. If the fire can find too easy a path to the chimney it takes it and doesn't bother with cooking anything. An earlier version had a rectangular hole. The pot completely covers the hole. The hole is cut with hammer and chisel and then hammered and ground smooth. When the pot is not there and there is still fire the hole is covered by a lid made from the circle that was cut out. The cooking surface has a strong rim so that pots can be wedged in firmly with stones or pieces of wood.

From the pictures it seems that the pot is exposed to the flame through a
hole in the metal sheet.
Is that hole round?
How think is the plate?
If the hole is square, was it cut using an angle grinder because that was
the only tool available which can cut material that thick?
In use, does the pot always cover the hole?

Thanks
Crispin

The women gather a rather hard wood in their dwindling forests. Don't know
the species. Probably should. They sit on little stools while the cook. The
cooking surface is about 30 cm above the dirt floor. I have not analyzed
the height from a technical point of view.

Perfect.

Is there a preferred fuel(s)?
What is the preferred height of the top of the pot from the floor, and
height to the cooking surface, if that is relevant?

Thanks
Crispin

Our fire box is metal, (parts we manufacture from 2mm sheet steel)brick, and
fire resistant mortar.
The internal chimney is up the wall. (Maasai women installation teams make
the chimney and install everything.) The chimney is brick made in the
village, and mud mortar as long as inside. 26 cm square.
We use cement and sand mortar where it penetrates the thatch and becomes
exposed to weather. Above the thatch we can safely use a metal tube we make
ourselves out of thin sheet that would be inappropiate inside. The chimney
inside is at most pleasantly warm. Kids can sit right next to mom while she
cooks. The women usually cover the chimney with mud to match the walls.
They love the cleanliness and the added floor space, having removed the
three stones.
