A further word:
The CO is burning out and the excess air level reduced both by the
interruption of flow. That translates into a higher temperature gas.
Whatever the heat transfer efficiency was, it has been improved by having
radiative heating under the pot so the system relies less on convective heat
transfer.
It is probably worth Paul repeating the tests with and without the mesh to
see if the effect is reproducible the extent of the improvement. It would be
interesting to see the CO(EF) numbers for both conditions. (CO concentration
times air demand).
