[Stoves] Using TLUD and other chars for water treatment in developing communities:

Hi Crispin (et al.) -

We're just beginning to look at biochars in taste and odor control
applications. For instance my colleague found that forced draft 1-gal
"Toucan" TLUD chars are fairly effective for removing chlorine taste. (He
observed in villages in Peru that people would drink water known to be
contaminated rather than chlorinated water because of the taste, to which
they are not desensitized like we are in the US.)

We have an upcoming column study to look at removal of other common T&O
compounds, mainly MIB I think will turn out to be our focus compound as
it's difficult to sorb and is detectable by smell/taste as low as 10 ng/L
(!).

Just hypothesizing at this point, but the trend seems to be that high
temperature, high-draft TLUD chars perform by far the best in most of our
applications of interest. Ballpark....about half as good as commercial
bituminous activated carbon. They also do not leach native organic matter
into water, which is nice (in contrast to low temperature chars that will
undergo some initial leaching).

So I woud encourage you to try a good high-draft TLUD char in your boiling
water - it might make a noticeable difference. Sorption kinetics are sped
up by elevated temperature, so that may help as well (?). But I have not
directly experimented with this myself.

Josh
