people are asking me since long, long for one.....
Was driving car recently on the highway,  was thinking how to design
something unique, something new?- and after some hours if thinking and
driving, the concept was born.... It will be on the base of 2 oil drums,
  means about 400 litres of volume for biomass, char recovered should be
~2/3, means ~266 litres of char or charcoal per day....  Smoke will be
burnt plus heat recycled (this is new, existing ones just after-burn the
  smoke in the chimney;  without using its heat for carbonization); my
  mobile retort will be different. Will be light weight about ~150kg,
low-cost about ~500EUR, can be pulled by a person, vehicle or a horse,
donkey. Will start building a prototype mid 2013?. Am looking for
a sponsor      and/or     a partner.....?cheers Chris,

So we are talking about mobile pyrolysis units, not gasification?

Just make sure the drums can be replaced every few weeks as they won't 
last.  I would be inclined to switch to custom built drums, but keep the 
diameter the same so that the sealable lids from 200 L drums can fit on 
them, and extend then to over a metre in length and 2mm in thickness.  
This will increase production and longevity of kiln.
