In the 1980-ies Bridgewater et al experimented with wood pellets in a vertical quarz pipe with a forced downward air flow. The flow was adjusted to keep the combustion zone stationary.
It should be in the proceedings of the Sustenable Energy conference at Hamburg 1987 or Lisbon 1989.
