Dear Ron

Thanks I was answering from my phone and didn't notice the address.

Here are two picture taken of a Namibian Tsotso test. You can see that it
looks much like any side-feeding stove but it has an open space under the
combustion chamber and an air connection to the fuel chamber with a small
number of 8mm holes. Basically the fire runs in an air-starved condition
under the back half of the pot and in a high excess air condition at the
front.

As the char builds up, it gets pushed to the back by wood added. Eventually
there is not enough space left to put any more wood when the char piles up
to the point of touching the pot. The combustion efficiency suffers a lot of
course as it can't burn properly.

When the fire is burning with an open space around the flames tend to run up
the back wall. There are three pot supports that sink the pot into the body
of the stove increasing the heat transfer efficiency and reducing the effect
of cross winds. The energy consumption is pretty good but of course it uses
quite a bit of fuel to make the charcoal which is tossed as it cannot burn
it. In other words, it tests well using a WBT but uses a lot of fuel.

The body is a double-walled metal shell with a filling. I am not sure about
the number of them sold. It won a competition and was promoted at one time,
perhaps 4 years ago.

There is a 'real' Tsotso ('twig') ,multi-fuel stove from Zimbabwe invented
by David Hancock in 1984 but it is nothing like this one.

Regards
Crispin

Crispin. With ccs. (think you wanted the list)

Thanks.

You ask some good questions below. Dean Still can perhaps answer.

I am amazed at the 20% char value below. Hmm.

Ron
