[Stoves] Jatropha fruit as fuel?

Dear Dean,
We have been testing a gasfier of approximal 10 Litre (made for corn cobs), using wood pellets of excellent quality, 4% moisture content.It was burning like a "turbo charged" gasifier of a "standard" size, but lasted less or the same as a 6 Litre.On the other hand it was keeping the 20 Litre of water boiling at full blast for a couple of hours.
We did not notice any difference in terms of soot or black carbon, but the "high speed" mode, might give more gases during the gasification process.
We feel it is more a choice between efficiency (performence) and fuel efficient, like turning the "nob" on an electricstove from one to three.At full blast you will normaly use more power or energy (electricity).
We think the "secret" is the airflow and the possibillity to control it and have made progress to do so.
We prefer to use fuel of low moisture content and adjust the design and airflow of the stove to fit the different types of biomass.

Dear Otto,
I would think that especially with potentially dirty fuels (or any pellet using different components) gasifiers need to be engineered to burn cleanly and I agree that stoves need to be tested to determine emissions. Have you ever noticed that sometimes gasifiers do better with some moisture in the fuel? I find that really dry fuel can burn too quickly and make excess smoke and gas.

We have in the pipeline to test a new design of natural draft gasifiers, using jatropha seeds and pellets, for emmissions and toxcic fumes.

We should be very carefull adviceing people using these types of fuel, before it has been carefully tested by independent institutions.

My regrets for not responding to this request 6 months ago.  I admit that it got lost in my messy inbox which I have now reduced from 6000 messages to a mere 2400, and in the process uncovered Joyce's email.

 
Burning Jatropha seeds whole or in briquettes in open cooking arrangements is a bad idea.  It produces a smoky, smelly fire and probably exposes cooks to toxic emissions.  I even question burning Jatropha oil in lamps in enclosed areas for the same reason. Maybe others know of emissions studies.
