You might want to reveiw Amy Smith from charcoal production videos from MIT.edu on You Tube 
Google:  Amy Smith charcoal
One I watched  she is charing corn stalks--- like we could turn fronds in to biochar for fuel
and terra preta. Then the shell charcoal becomes  market item.
